MOO Temp
Designing a sustainable office for the short-term
When our longstanding clients MOO came to us to help improve a temporary office for them, we had one question - how do we make this a sustainable solution?
MOO.com were in the midst of finding a new office space following a restructure and adoption of new working styles after the pandemic. We were working with them in a Workplace Consultancy capacity to find the best new home but in the meantime, they needed a temporary office space that supported in-person working.
Being the charming and characterful brand that MOO.com is, they wanted their temporary space to still be a reflection of them and create somewhere that their people would find inspiring and want to work. They wanted to avoid their temporary home feeling too temporary.
Sustainable interior design with character
As they had no previous furniture to reuse apart from some desks, our concern was how to furnish and dress this space without creating waste. We didn’t know what their future, permanent space was going to be so it was unlikely we could guarantee furniture bought for the temporary space would be used in the future.
With an understandably small budget for a temporary solution, the easiest approach would have been to shop from the high street with affordable, in stock furniture. Instead we decided we needed a more circular approach to our design and instead set ourselves the target of only furnishing the space with second hand or vintage furniture that ideally was from the UK or at a push, neighbouring European countries.
Furniture procurement with the past and the future in mind
With our focus on second hand and vintage furnishings, our design needed to be led by what was available which meant our conceptual approach was quite loose.
Luckily our clients, having worked with us for many years, trusted our judgment and let us pick as we saw fit. It gave us the ability to jump on some amazing finds and ultimately create a space that is full of character and fun.
The furniture we found was so loved that we suggested that at the end of the temporary tenancy, if furniture couldn’t be used in the new space, MOO employees would be given the chance to bid for the furniture with proceeds going to charity. Another great example of lateral thinking and ethical design choices.
