The most characterful office design in London…

Sonia Friedman Productions are the UK’s most decorated theatre production company. SFP’s incredible success meant that the company was bursting at the seams and for two years had been looking for a space in West End Theatreland to allow them to relocate from their beloved home at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

With a desire to retain the feel of the charming, characterful home they had been used to, SFP hired Trifle* to work with contractors TC&D to transform the newly selected but corporate office into a space that would embody the theatrical nature of their business.

Whilst their new space was larger than their previous working office, it still needed to work hard to provide a multitude of working environments - from quiet script reading areas to open plan desk spaces. We provided flexible solutions like a multi-purpose boardroom with moveable furniture suitable for large meetings and practice read-throughs. New cellular spaces were built for private offices, while every small nook housed an area to sit and read and get away from the hubbub of the office beyond.

Filling a corporate office with personality

SFP’s new office was a very corporate, somewhat soulless office space. Transforming the space into one resembling a Georgian townhouse was a unique challenge for Trifle* and expectations were high. Working with Sonia and her team, the colour palette chosen was dark and rich. A complementary mixture of textures, woods, velvets and leather added to the cosy feel. Original theatre chairs were reupholstered in gold for the boardroom, providing both character and overspill seating for large meetings. Placing the fantastic props acquired from the productions in every nook and cranny allowed us to inject a theatrical feel throughout the space.

A small private office could still be filled with character while remaining practical

Sustainable office design decisions

We had a challenging design brief and a constrained budget on this project so structural changes were minimal to reduce cost. Instead of removing the existing built-in storage units, we had new bespoke doors made. Apart from desks and task chairs, the vast majority of the furniture was existing within SFP or sourced from second hand and vintage suppliers.

We also repurposed props from previous productions and reupholstered old theatre chairs which not only added a characterful touch but also created additional seating in the multi-purpose boardroom.
